Port 139 Upswing

Internet Storm Center is reporting a large increase in port 139 scans. Not much information on the spike yet. Chartl_3

Sans is notes that the data for Sources, Targets and Reports shows all three are on the rise.

There could be several possibilities for this.  For starters, Microsoft released a patch for MS06-040 which was already being exploited in the wild.

Friends First, Co-Worker Next !!

Mike A, building the next Web3.0 Wave ?

Mike A of Techcrunch wants to build the biggest darn empire on the web2.0 wave. Let's call it Web3.0 :)_

FT has a nice post that brings me some insight on the strategy play.

"In a year and a half I will get to the scale of CNet,” he declares. [..] Mr Arrington says: “I don’t think anyone has come close to monetising on the scale I have."

If I see his strategy right, then he needs to collobrate the space between the web2.0 companies,  not just the start ups, he needs to rope in the Big players too , Yahoo, Google and the like.

Equity sharing is a pathway which he proposed - "We need to partner, create a distributed system, and win virally." My inital thoughts when I heard that was, a big No No - but I think he is on the right value pathway on that. I'll have to retract my words :(-

But, Mike has to remember rule#3 - Large and established companies can beat start-ups !!

BCE Photos

Ok I am not a flicker fan and I cant use the new Beta picasa. So, heres my  BCE Toronto photo album

BCE - Startups and Partnerships

I kinda went down with Citizen Ziggy for a brief and got to this session late.  [Startups and Partnerships ?] I don't even know what this was about... wrong room , wrong time --Hey folks  don't freaking change the stickys !! ...  Solly --I thought is was about hacks :)-

Anyhoot, I have to admit, these two are a dynamic. Dana Ditomaso  and Brooke Gordon of  liquidesign . They produce a lot of insight on the partnership startups.

It has been a long since I sat and watched passion. Hats off too these two. They seem to have it together.  Brooke is vocal --loves talking  and Dana analytical. Their  folio is website design and SEO strategies.  They stemmed a lot of confidence between themselves. Certainly a folio will I would like to a keep in touch with, just because they make a good team !!

SEO and Dana - BCE Session#2

I sat in for an interesting topic , in fact my first on SEO..albeit from a participation player and not as a strategic player. I had to remind myself to be nice and keep quiet. Dscf0599

Dana Ditomaso of liquidesign  moved this session forward. What caught me off guard was my question my "on PR" - Dana's  rebuttal was that it has no meaning at all in todays SEO. To the best of my knowledge this is an important factor for  websites and webmasters, without Page Rank a sites chances of hitting the first page of SERP is slim. This  means that the user experiences is tarnished in terms of not seeing your web page within the SERP.  No wonder it was called as rubback --you rub my back, I'll rub your back concept.

Another topic was "link baiting" within a site. I am opinionated that this can pollute the indexes.  Dana had a point to make, Google does the index and its not in violation of the TOS, its a technique that needs to be used. But then is not link baiting a prop for PR too ??

Maybe I need a little bit more grog  or I am just a nerd within google based technolgies ?  :)_

Introverts and networks

Sacha went thru this session at BCE-Toronto This was basically about introverts and networks -both offline and online. I think she had a couple of good points that I Scrapbloged here. Dscf0598 The theme was how to facilicate conversations and ensure that introverts particpate in events. Some of the clue points could be to act  like a host of the event  even if you are not the host. Another area would be to introduce people and read the body language. The circle of conversations always needs to be expanded.  One critical value proposition is that you have to accesible both offline and online, that  meeting them halfway.

I think that this session was pretty open and a couple of good thoughts were seeded. In general it was more about social networks.

One thing that strikes me , within the social networks , the depth of knowledge  is still wanting. Secondlife, WoW and other spaces seems to be cultivating human behaviour patterns, that social and pychological analyst's still find difficulty on defining. How does an introvert in real life, change the persona in virtual life ?  Does First life rules exist in second life space (virtual space) ?  Do we need to live by those rules or not ?

anyhooot, Ms.Geekette sez shes an introvert. - me sez no wayyyyyyyy !!  I think shes an extrovert, who lives and breaths on the web and loves to be there in teh space, kinda of thing. A lot of engery actually spins around Sacha !!

BarCampEarth -Toronto

BarcampEarth at Toronto was kinda fun , but guys stop shuffling the agenda across the boards !! :)-  I missed a couple of slots becuase the participants moved it right across onto a different board. Dscf0592

My Rule#1 : Dont move the Sticky across, only permit the stickys to move vertically on a board , at least like this we know which room what is happening.

All in all -Both the Ryans did a good job at organzing the event.

Heres Sacha doing some fun stuff with her laptop. She sold $200/- sticker space for the weekend.  Not a Bad POC at play there.

Job Boards and EcoSystems

OK lets be nice, let me think before I rant !! A long time ago, I asked a  "who is better " question.

This evening while taking my river of news. I find Mike's posting . My first thought was "is this not the same type of Edgeio concept" ( which by the way has not gained traction.) Too boot , Alex echo's the same thought "Wasn’t this called Edgeio?"

Anyway, back to the topic :)-

"There’s no way we can compete with the big job boards fighting individual battles. We need to partner, create a distributed system, and win virally."

Did not  Mike say that the Web1.0 companies "are already extinct. " So why would he want to compete against the Web1.0  Job boards sites ?

Secondly, why this dig at Om ?

"Om passed on my proposal, and I’m sure he has his reasons. But in my mind, this is all a very web 1.0 way of thinking. I don’t want to have my own garden, a sort of mini monster.com. I want to be a part of an ecosystem. "

No Mike--  you do your stuff, let Om do his stuff.  Both of you will still part of the ecosystem.

Both of you are competing in a healthy space.  Competition brings out quality and user traction. Collaboration and "turn this into a stand alone company and split up equity." is a little far fetched.  M&A so early in the game is out of wack.

...and about that owning the garden statement, but thats exactly what is happening.

CrunchGear , CrunchBoard Jobs , CrunchNotes , TalkCrunch , MobileCrunch , TechCrunch UK  ,TechCrunch en Français  ,TechCrunch 日本語版  ,TechCrunch

i wonder why Mike has never tried  open collaborate on above sites with any other entity ? I have not seen an open call to any other  -have you ?? Yet, he gives a first call to Om and publicly posts it.

Mike is an intriguing person. I have still not yet figured out his strategy !! He has a strong ReaderBase -nearing the 100K mark, but as things go by, these readers may get a different glimpse of who and what his intentions are, like Guillaumeb wrote here

"You have no idea who I am? This is sad, very sad then you don’t even know who’s making money for you. ? "

hmmmmmmm..throw the baby under the bus.. thats the way we clean the garden !!
